At Discovery Climbing, we take pride in sharing our love of rock climbing with the wider community. Our purpose is to develop confidence and skills in children through climbing. One of the best ways to do this is with outdoor bouldering walls, which bring parents and their children together in a safe and fun environment. Climbing is one of the rare activities that appeals to all ages, from young children to adults, making an outdoor bouldering wall the perfect addition to any school or community space.
Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that doesn’t take you high enough off the ground to need a rope or harness. Although it is a solo activity, the beauty of bouldering is that it fosters a sense of community in working out how to climb the routes, and it requires no equipment to participate. This means that anyone can participate, anytime, and the bouldering walls require little upkeep after installation to remain at their best.
Safety is always our first priority. As such, all of our bouldering wall builds include custom soft fall area, in accordance with the Australian Playground and Artificial Climbing Structure Standards. We also suggest fencing and signage to further alert people that the space is for rock climbing, and ensure that nobody is hurt by inadequate warning of the bouldering wall.
We aim to engage local landscaping suppliers in creating our safe and fun outdoor bouldering spaces, not only to help the local economy and environment but to reduce supply chain costs and increase flexibility—it’s a win-win for everyone.

Play has an important role in child development, and is part of a well-rounded learning environment. According to reputable paediatric and childhood education journals, natural play, especially self-driven physical activities like rock climbing, “contribute to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth,” and is essential in promoting healthy child development”. Likewise, engaging in outdoor time not only allows children to develop more advanced motor skills but assists them in engaging in appropriate risk-taking and exploration activities in a safe and secure environment.
Rock climbing in the school environment provides vital assistance in the development of children, and, even better, it is a fun, one-of-a-kind experience for many. We always recommend getting the school principal on the wall to test it out!
A large part of maintaining a fun and enriching environment for play in schools is safety, and as in jungle gyms and other playgrounds, the responsibility of maintaining this obligation falls to teachers. There are supervision requirements for outdoor bouldering areas in schools, just like other play spaces, and we provide full training courses for staff to ensure that students—and anyone else who may use the wall—are safe.
